Celebrating July 13th – Statehood Day in Herceg Novi, the newly reconstructed Nikola Kovacevic Promenade from Titova Villa to Galeb in Igalo was ceremonially unveiled. Representatives from state and local institutions recognized the significance of completing this major project, marked by the ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Stevan Katic and Bojana Mitric from the Capital Projects Administration.
Mayor Stevan Katic reflected on the more than 50-year wait for this reconstruction in Igalo and Herceg Novi, underscoring the urgency of addressing long-standing issues without delay.
“Similar to other instances where progress stalled, we took proactive steps to break through inertia. This initiative ensures Herceg Novi is no longer overlooked by the state for investments and general improvements,” remarked Katic.
He emphasized the 1.4 km stretch, entirely paved with durable concrete slabs, alongside new water, sewerage, hydrant, and stormwater systems. The promenade also boasts new public lighting, fences, and a lush greenery of tamarisks and palms.
“I believe this to be the most substantial investment in promenade reconstruction through a single project since its inception, akin to the closure of the narrow-gauge railway in the early 20th century, transformed into one of the Adriatic’s most picturesque pedestrian zones,” he declared, announcing plans for further reconstruction from Hotel Plaža to Meljine in collaboration with Morsko Dobro, slated for September.
“With this segment’s completion, Herceg Novi will finally have a fully revitalized promenade stretching from Igalo to Meljine. The combined investment in these sections exceeds 5 million EUR, a testament to the deserving stature of our promenade and Herceg Novi,” concluded Mayor Stevan Katic.
Katic extended gratitude to former Public Works Administration Director Boro Lucic, instrumental in elevating Herceg Novi’s priority for significant investments during his tenure.
“Currently, the Public Works Administration oversees approximately 15 major projects in Herceg Novi, progressively nearing completion. Initiatives such as the bus station construction and other ongoing projects will enhance the city’s tourism appeal, improve local livelihoods, and offer visitors a more enriching experience. The government’s recognition and support are now yielding visible results,” added Lucic.
Vice-Mayor Miloš Konjević highlighted the promenade’s significance for residents and tourists, recalling the project’s inception in 2017.
“I am delighted with the renovated promenade section, a development that will greatly benefit both locals and tourists. Together with the upcoming promenade section reconstruction, we anticipate a cityscape that all can take pride in,” shared Konjević.
Vasilije Seferović, Secretary of the Secretariat for Communal Activities, introduced retractable bollards as a new feature, regulating traffic from 6 to 10 AM. Post this period, only residents with registered residences and private garages or yards may access, ensuring no prolonged vehicle presence on the promenade.
“In the near future, we aim to address parking challenges in the Gomila and Topla neighborhoods, where parking shortages persist. We are advancing with project preparations, aiming for resolutions in the coming year,” Seferović disclosed.
Aleksandar Kovačević from the Agency for Construction and Development of Herceg Novi affirmed these projects signify a transformative change for the city.
“As an agency, we are committed to serving citizens and upholding professional standards, ensuring all endeavors meet requisite quality and purpose. Despite differing preferences and adjustments during the promenade’s planning, community consensus favored the installation of palm trees,” affirmed Kovačević.
