Serbia and Montenegro forge stronger connections through key infrastructure initiatives

Infrastructure projects are crucial for the renewal and strengthening of regional connections, emphasized the Minister of Transport, Maja Vukićević.

During a meeting with a delegation from Serbia, led by Minister Goran Vesić, Vukićević expressed gratitude for the swift preparation of agreements reached during their previous visit. She highlighted that the continuation of the second section of the motorway is a priority.

In addition to the motorway, Vukićević mentioned the reconstruction of the Bar-Bijelo Polje railway line and the funds secured from European sources for the reconstruction of the Bar-Golubovci section. This reconstruction is vital for improving the capacity of the Port of Bar and acquiring new trains.

The ministers agreed that the construction of a joint border crossing in Gostun would reduce wait times at the border. Deputy Prime Minister Zogović assessed that relations between Serbia and Montenegro are entering a new era, with expectations for concrete agreements on joint activities.

Vesić stressed the importance of regional connectivity and noted that infrastructure projects are a focus of the Serbian government and his ministry. He expressed readiness to support Montenegro in building the motorway and reconstructing the railway, as well as establishing cooperation regarding freight transport through the Port of Bar.

“Montenegro is Serbia’s most important partner and brotherly country. Therefore, we will work together on infrastructure projects that connect Serbia and Montenegro, such as the Belgrade-Bar railway and the Požega-Andrijevica motorway,” Vesić stated.

He added that Serbia and Montenegro have already jointly approached the European Commission to secure funding for the modernization and electrification of the railway between Belgrade and Bar.

“We have agreed to jointly construct the motorway between Požega and Andrijevica, which is nearly 160 kilometers long, and to establish a commission that will focus on creating a joint road crossing between Serbia and Montenegro in Gostun,” Vesić said.

He noted that last summer, Serbia and Montenegro established a joint railway crossing at the Bijelo Polje railway station, reducing travel time by approximately 45 minutes.

In addition to officials from the Ministry of Transport, the meeting was attended by directors from Monteput, Railway Infrastructure, Montecargo and Railway Transport.
