Reducing airport fees essential for Montenegro’s tourism revival

Economic analyst Mirza Mulešković has stated that reducing airport fees is essential for Montenegro to regain its position as an easily accessible travel destination. He also emphasized the importance of improving airport infrastructure to support this objective.

In an interview with RTCG, Mulešković explained that lowering airport fees and enhancing the competitiveness of Montenegrin airports are crucial for the country to reestablish itself as a prominent tourist spot. He noted that past policies led many travelers to shift to Tirana’s airport, which resulted in increased investments, more tourists, and greater revenue for Albania’s public finances.

Mulešković criticized previous decisions that negatively impacted Montenegro’s economic development, highlighting that the increase in airport fees was damaging to the tourism sector. He pointed out that official statements from airlines indicated their withdrawal from the Montenegrin market due to the higher costs, confirming the harm caused by the fee hikes.

To maintain its status as a regional tourism leader, Montenegro needs to improve its connectivity and competitiveness, according to Mulešković. He expressed optimism that the recent agreement to reduce airport fees will encourage previous airline operators to return to Montenegro. However, he is concerned that these operators may have already established a strong foothold at regional airports, which could complicate their return.

Mulešković urged for a competitive approach to attract lost airline operators while also focusing on expanding airport infrastructure and enhancing services. “This strategy is crucial for achieving better accessibility and higher service quality at our airports,” he concluded.
