Montenegro targets overtourism prevention through cooperation and diversification

Montenegro is planning ahead to prevent overtourism, which is a problem in some neighboring countries, said Montenegro’s Minister of Tourism, Simonida Kordić, in an interview with the BBC.

She explained to host Tanja Beketi how communication, cooperation with other Balkan countries and diversification are being used to attract tourists, both to the mountains and the coastal areas.

“It’s a small country, but rich in terms of various potentials, experiences, cultures, and, of course, nature, which is impressive. More and more, our guests are recognizing this and wanting to experience all of it, as well as try traditional local food, which is becoming a privilege,” Kordić said.

She also mentioned that she believes the key to successful tourism lies more in cooperation than in competition.
