Tourism Minister Simonida Kordić has visited the Debeli Brijeg border crossing, one of Montenegro’s busiest entry points. Kordić highlighted the severe congestion caused by both tourists and transit vehicles, which creates significant delays and impacts tourism in the region.
Kordić expressed concerns about the current situation, noting that the lengthy travel times between Herceg Novi and Ulcinj make tourism difficult. She emphasized the need for urgent action to address these issues.
Following a meeting with representatives from the Border Police in Herceg Novi, Kordić proposed several measures to alleviate traffic congestion:
- Implementing a transit tax to redirect traffic away from the heavily used route through Debeli Brijeg, encouraging vehicles to use alternative routes through Trebinje, Nikšić, Podgorica, and Božaj.
- Introducing fast mobile document readers to streamline border processing and reduce wait times.
- Establishing a dedicated lane or separate crossing for frequent border crossers, including hotel staff, accommodation providers, and local residents.
Kordić also anticipates the rapid implementation of a joint border crossing with Republika Srpska at Sitnica, which she believes will significantly reduce waiting times, improve the travel experience for tourists, and enhance their overall impression of Montenegro.
