Number of unemployed in Montenegro increased by 9.7%

In the first quarter of this year, there were 47.4 thousand unemployed in Montenegro, which is a share of 15.5% in the total number of active population. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of unemployed increased by 9.7%, and compared to the same quarter of the previous year, it recorded an increase of 0.2%, according to Monstat’s labor force survey data.
Out of 306.5 thousand working people, 259.2 thousand or 84.5% were employed. The number of employees compared to the previous quarter increased by 1.3%, and compared to the same quarter of the previous year, it recorded a growth of 10.5%.
– The structure of employed persons according to sectors of activity shows that as many as 77.2% of people are employed in service activities. 18.6% of the working population work in the industry and construction sectors, while only 4.2% are employed in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors – data show.
The population outside the labor force aged 15 to 89 is 191.6 thousand people. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of people outside the labor force decreased by 3.8% and compared to the same quarter of the previous year, it recorded a decrease of 11.7%.
For the age group from 15 to 89 in the first quarter, the activity rate was 61.5%, the employment rate was 52%, and the unemployment rate was 15.5%. The rate of the population outside the labor force is 38.5%.
Of the total number of active population, 165,500 or 54% are men, and 141,000 or 46% are women, while the total number of the population outside the labor force is 113,000 or 59% women, and 78,600 or 41% men.
– Of the total number of employees, 140.2 thousand or 54.1% are men, and 119,000 or 45.9% are women. If we talk about the unemployed, 25.3 thousand or 53.4% are men, and 22.1 thousand or 46.6% are women – the document states.
The largest number of active population consists of people in the age group of 25 to 49 years, 180.1 thousand. The age group in which the largest number of the population is out of the labor force is the group from 65 to 89 years old, which accounts for 64.4 thousand people out of the labor force.
– The largest number of employees are those in the age group from 25 to 49 years old, 151.6 thousand employees. Also, the largest number of unemployed are those in the same age group, ie 28.5 thousand unemployed – it was stated.
The largest share in the educational structure of the active population is those with completed secondary education, 60.6%, followed by 33.5% with completed higher or higher education and 5.9% with completed elementary school or lower education.
The largest participation in the educational structure of the population outside the workforce is held by persons with completed secondary education, 52.5%, followed by 37.8% with completed elementary school or lower, and the remaining 9.7% with completed higher or higher education.
The educational structure of employed persons shows that 58.3% of persons have completed high school, followed by employees with completed higher or higher education 35.6%, and persons with completed elementary school or lower education 6.1%.
The educational structure of unemployed persons shows that 73.2% of them have completed secondary school, followed by unemployed with completed higher or higher education 21.9%, and persons with completed elementary school or lower education 4.9%.
In the observed period, 16.5 thousand or 34.8% of the unemployed were looking for a job for less than 12 months, up to two years 10 thousand or 21.1% of the unemployed, while 20.9 thousand or 44.1% of the unemployed were looking for a job for two years and longer.
Monstat states that the analysis published data obtained through the Labor Force Survey, which was conducted in the first quarter of this year. 1,927 households in the territory of Montenegro were surveyed. Data were collected on demographic characteristics for all household members (5,053 people), and for persons aged 15 to 89, data on their work activity (4,434).
