EPCG focuses on renewable energy and decarbonization at Balkan Solar Summit

Electric Power Industry of Montenegro (EPCG) is committed to the strategic development of renewable energy sources (RES) and the decarbonization of the energy sector, said EPCG’s Executive Director, Ivan Bulatović.

He made this statement at the Balkan Solar Summit, which began today at the Banski Dvor in Banja Luka.

Bulatović emphasized that events like this enable the exchange of experiences and strengthen cooperation between government institutions, businesses, and investors, which is essential for the continued development and stability of the energy system.

The conference is recognized as one of the most important energy events in the region.

It gathered key players in the renewable energy sector, including experts, business leaders, decision-makers, and investors, who are addressing leading challenges and opportunities in solar, wind, and hydro energy. The aim is to promote and develop sustainable energy solutions in the region.

In addition, discussions are also focusing on regulatory frameworks and policies that will facilitate more efficient implementation of renewable energy projects, the statement added.

Speaking at the panel “Completed Large Renewable Energy Projects in the Region – Experiences,” Bulatović highlighted that the diversification of energy production from RES is a priority for EPCG’s development.

He reminded attendees of the major renewable energy projects in Montenegro, including “Solari 3000+ 500+,” “Solari 5000+,” and the “Gvozd 1” wind farm, and emphasized that the Gvozd project would continue.

Bulatović particularly focused on the “Solari” projects.

According to him, the “Solari 3000+ 500+” and “Solari 5000+” projects are a key step toward Montenegro’s energy transition, allowing citizens and businesses to become active participants in producing green energy.

“Our goal with this project is to increase energy efficiency, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and create a sustainable energy model that will bring long-term benefits for both citizens and the country’s economy,” said Bulatović.

He also mentioned the ongoing reconstruction of two large hydroelectric plants under EPCG, “Perućica” and “Piva,” and the preparation of a tender for battery systems procurement.

“Our focus is also on the development and integration of battery systems, which will enable the optimal use of generated energy and increase the stability of the power system,” he added.

Bulatović highlighted the collaboration with UNDP and proposed the creation of a Training Center for professional development in “green jobs.”

He also noted the significant progress made in the development of the transmission network in Montenegro.

The statement concluded by mentioning that EPCG will continue to actively participate in regional and international initiatives that contribute to the green transition and sustainable development of the energy sector.
